Pilgrim’s UK has joined the UN Global Compact Network UK as part of its new sustainability strategy, Pilgrim’s UK 2030.
Joining the network will support Pilgrim’s commitment to publicly reporting each year on its progress as part of their 2030 strategy, documenting improvements in sustainability and human rights initiatives amongst others.
The United Nations Global Compact is an initiative committed to implementing universal sustainability principles and to taking steps to support UN goals. It is a global platform for business to proactively network and engage in areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption.
The UN Global Compact Network UK is the focal point for UK-based participants of the UN Global Compact and its mission is to turn global momentum on sustainability into practical local action.
Pilgrim’s UK’s sustainable manufacturing targets, focusing on areas such as human rights, biodiversity, energy, water and waste – are all aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, as part of their aim to future-proof the business.
Matt Dight, Head of Sustainability at Pilgrim’s Pride Ltd., said: “This is another big step forward as part of our strategy, as we look to build upon our already industry-leading sustainability positions and align ourselves with wider targets. Joining the network allows us to be clear and transparent to customers, end consumers and all stakeholders on our work and progress in this area.
“Participation in the network’s events and activities gives us the ability to tackle challenging issues with other like-minded businesses across the world. Working directly with the UN to tackle the Sustainable Development Goals is a proud moment for us as a business and demonstrates our commitment to be the best and most respected company in our industry, creating the opportunity of a better future for our people and the environment we work in”
Steve Kenzie, Executive Director, UN Global Compact Network UK, said: “The core of the United Nations Global Compact’s mission is to support companies doing business responsibly by aligning their strategies and operations with ten universal principles on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. We also support business taking actions to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. We are delighted and encouraged by Pilgrim’s UK’s endorsement of our initiative.”
Five sustainability pillars make up Pilgrim’s UK’s strategy: Sustainable farming, Sustainable food production, Sustainable Products, Sustainable Packaging and Sustainable Business & Community.
